Editor’s Favorites: Luna Retinol Sleeping Night Oil

by Tamara Styer

Every night as I tuck myself into bed, I begin applying an array of products, from tip to toe. I’ve been doing this ritual since I was a teenager, sampling creams, oils and toners from my mother’s medicine cabinet. Now coming up on the precipice of my 35th year, I am so grateful for the plethora of preventative and anti-aging products I have relentlessly applied for over half my life. Over those years — as you can imagine — I have used hundreds, maybe even thousands of products. There are so many that I love, and so many new products to try, it’s just endless.

In the past few years, I’ve started a love affair with facial oils. Once thought of as a forbidden substance for acne-prone skin, I have found that the opposite is true. Since I started using various oils on my skin, my blemishes have cleared up, my skin is glowing, and I can only imagine how much my cells are enjoying the luxury. (Renew, renew!) After trying out many different versions, I have a handful of favorite facial and body oils that I now cannot live without.

One of those favorite oils is Luna Retinol Sleeping Night Oil by Sunday Riley. This next-generation retinoid oil touts its ability to reduce the appearance of pores and wrinkles while fighting the signs of premature aging and surface redness. It’s everything you want in one special little vial. I ceremonially take the glass tincture bottle out of its box (yes, I keep it in the box because I think it is so special) and unscrew the lid. I slowly and carefully squeeze the little eyedropper and watch as it fills with a deep, ocean blue oil. Every drop is precious, so I only fill the dropper about halfway. I gently drip the magic potion into my palm, then with my fingertips, dab the oil onto my cheekbones, my forehead, my chin. Oils should be applied by gently patting into the skin with your fingertips instead of wiping or rubbing. The oil melts into my skin as I dab, dab, dab, avoiding my eyes (except a bit on my laugh lines).

The experience of applying facial oils is luxurious, particularly with Luna Retinol Sleeping Night Oil. I feel like a gypsy woman with a secret elixir that bestows youth and beauty upon anyone who acquires it. The scent reminds me of something far off in a distant memory; perhaps something from childhood. It smells sweet, a little musky, a touch aquatic.

As for the results, I have noticed smoother skin in the mornings. If the decadent ritual of applying Luna at night isn’t enough, waking up to more beautiful skin is a sign that the product really works. My skin is divinely moisturized, free of blemishes and even-toned. I imagine that this type of moisture packed with powerful ingredients is smoothing out any of those sneaky fine lines I’ve been relentlessly trying to prevent since my teens.

I do wash this product off in the mornings, because you don’t want retinol on your skin when you go into the sunlight. (I fantasize that it turns me into a beautiful vampire.) Use a gentle face wash — my favorite is Clinique Liquid Facial Soap — then moisturize with your favorite day cream, preferably with SPF to protect those new youthful cells you’ve been generating all night. I’m a fan of using SPF powders like Bare Minerals, of which I will soon write about my deep love affair. But that’s a lovely story for another time. For now, I’m going to finish my night ritual, slather my body with more skin-nourishing goodies, and get some much-needed beauty sleep.   DM
