Matt Cusson: Super Human

Matt Cusson - New York, New York
Singer Songwriter / R&B / Pop
Song Submitted: “Leaving L.A.

A PHENOMENAL SINGER AND piano player, Matt Cusson crafts soulful, jazzy blues songs that melt us into a sweet state of mind. With the vocal finesse of Adam Levine and the oh-so-buttery John Mayer, he’s one of the better male vocalists we’ve heard — like, ever. From vocal control to dynamics, Cusson has us captivated. And with the addition of compelling song arrangements, as well as background vocals, soulful R&B has met its match. If this guy’s music isn’t in your playlist, you are missing out.

One day back in October while shopping through the mall, I found THE most adorable holiday hair band; because you know that’s when Christmas starts in retail. Instantly, ideas started rushing through my mind of hair and makeup for a holiday beauty shoot. So, we found our model — the lovely Emma Elliott — and got everything all squared away!

SALIO: Sound of Unity

WITHIN THE FIRST THREE seconds of hearing SALIO, we sent her an offer. Her voice is seasoned with a raspy, velvety tone — equal parts emotion and control. Her songwriting is commanding, and holds the depth of an artist who is in tune with her own creative point of view. “Bring Me Love” is a jazzy, neo-soul tune that makes us move, but the rest of SALIO’s playlist is worth a good listen, with songs like the soulful acoustic ballad “Lonesome Tales,” and a smattering of europop dance and experimental electronica songs.

Lydia: Taking it to the Street

THIS INDIE ROCK BAND out of the American Southwest is taking their organic ambient sound to new places, touring the States with a fresh album drop entitled Liquor. The brainchild of frontman and guitarist Leighton Antelman, Lydia draws influence from guys like Coldplay and Radiohead. Together with Matt Keller and Shawn Strader, Antelman performs songs with the sole purpose of provoking emotion. With a consistent touring schedule, fans at every stop and over 60,000 followers on social media, these guys don’t subscribe to the idea of fame, and are just along for the ride. Performing together on and off the road for the past ten years, Lydia delivers a breezy, feel-good sound that has captured our attention and landed a permanent spot our playlists. Deitra Magazine photographer Leslie Tucker got the chance to chat with Lydia when they performed at the Outland Ballroom in Springfield, Missouri on the Midwestern leg of their tour.

The Underhill Family Orchestra delivers an indie folk-rock sound steeped in a modernized rowdy Appalachian stomp. The band is made up of five musicians — Joe Grove, Steven Bryte Laney, Joelle Rosen, Benjamin Michael Cook and Roy Durand — all with diverse musical backgrounds and hailing from various parts of the South. Forming a home base in Mobile, Alabama, the band is seeking new fans and experiences across the States with a tour promoting their newly released album, Tell Me That You Love Me, which showcases what the band describes as Southern progressive popDrummer Roy Duran was featured in Issue 06 of Deitra Magazine with his previous band, Vagabond Swing, and contacted Editor Tamara Styer before stopping in at Front of House Lounge in downtown Springfield, Missouri. Deitra Mag's own Matt Loveland got the chance to catch up with this energetic collective to chat about their new music, performing on stage together and life on the road.

Art Inspired Academy: Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Written by Kristen Lentz | Photographed by Matt Loveland

Back in March and April, I had an amazing opportunity to be involved in our community in such a fun and inspiring — if you will — way. The Art Inspired Academy held five weeks of classes for teenage and young adult ladies called “Girls Just Want To Have Fun.” Over the span of these five weeks, girls learned how to create vision boards of fashion they love, hair and makeup tricks, wardrobing, runway walking and so much more. At the end of the classes, we held a fashion show during April’s First Friday Art Walk in Springfield, Missouri where the ladies would strut their stuff in the outfits they chose! With differing activities each week, I loved how these girls felt more and more comfortable in their own skin, as well as with each other.
